In the automobile the VW has cooling tin and in airplanes we need baffling... The 1/2 VW is often seen without baffling and it is an important oversight...
The cylinders will have a hot spot on the backside in the dead air there... This is corrected with the simple back tin seen below... The smooth curves into and out of the tin are in key locations to seduce the rear flowing air into a 90 degree turn down past the cylinder and then 90 degrees to the rear with the air flowing past the under side of the cylinder...
The engine had a constant smell of hot metal flowing back into the cab until we installed eyebrow scoops... The oil temperature dropped 15 degrees after this installation and the smell disappeared...
